Coconut Crabs - nature's nightmares

Is "Kill With Fire" your first reaction? Are you, perhaps, feeling justified for having that slightly creepy, looking-over-your-shoulder feeling when you take out the trash at night?

This image circulated around the internet a month or so ago with the title "WHAT IS THIS THING?!?"

The answer is: a coconut crab. Here's a list of things you never wanted to know about a whole species of creature:

- They grow up to 3 feet long
- They can weigh up to 9 pounds
- They live up to 30 years
- They like to climb coconut trees and tear apart coconuts with their bare claws, just for fun.
- They sometimes like to eat rats.
Ready? Are you sure? Okay, here's the last one...
- They may have eaten Amelia Earhart.

As many a troll will be overjoyed to point out, nobody is sure that they ate her - but that's like saying that nobody is sure that Crystal Skull was a travesty. Science is pretty sure that these dudes found Amelia, tore apart her body, ate her flesh, and kept her bones on their respective mantles as crab souvenirs.

With that in mind, here's some other Coco-Crabs to keep your subconscious satisfied. Sweet dreams tonight.

You walk out of your house one morning to get the paper and this is napping outside your front door:

...and just think, you freaked out at that spider you found near your bed.

 Digg!
